Week 39 in detail

Every extra day is still doing brain and lung work

Baby this week

Average length is about 50 cm and weight around 3.3 kg — averages lie, your baby will not be a pumpkin on a scale until after birth. Brain and lungs still benefit from staying in. Hair may be a full head or peach fuzz.

  • Size on the scan this late is an estimate with a wide error bar
  • Passing meconium in labour is a reason for extra monitoring, not a personal failure
  • The skull will mould — cone head is temporary

Your body this week

Watch for: a labour pattern your unit named, waters breaking, or a show that is more than a smear plus contractions. Rest. Eat. You do not need to walk the baby out unless movement feels good.

  • The 5-1-1 (or your unit’s) rule is a guide; bleeding or a green gush is come-in-now
  • A bassinet sheet washed now is a kindness
  • Hydration still affects contractions feeling crampy

Get ready

Review when they want you to call. The checklist above is protocol, home setup, and a playlist or quiet — your choice. If kicks drop, skip the nesting and go in.
