Week 19 in detail

Vernix arrives — senses switch on together

Baby this week

A creamy coating (vernix) starts to protect skin in the water. Touch, taste, smell, sight (as light), and hearing are all advancing. The baby is using the placenta as lungs, gut, and kitchen.

  • Vernix is not dirt; it is waterproofing
  • Sensory nerves are live; a loud concert is a thud, not a playlist
  • Lanugo plus vernix is the standard mid-pregnancy “look” on medical photos

Your body this week

Movements get regular enough that you start to know an evening wriggle from a morning stretch. Backache and a zing down the leg (sciatica) can start as posture changes. A physio beats “just stand up straighter.”

  • Calf stretches at night can cut cramps
  • Vitamin D is often low; ask before megadosing
  • Pelvic girdle pain that makes stairs awful deserves a referral, not grit

Get ready

Do not wait until you cannot walk to ask for pelvic support. The checklist above is stretches, magnesium-rich food, and vitamin D. If one leg gives way or pain is one-sided and severe, get checked the same day.
