Week 20 in detail

Halfway — measured head to heel from here

Baby this week

Length switches from crown-rump to crown-heel, which is why the number jumps. In female fetuses the uterus has formed; in male fetuses testes are descending. Hearing is good enough that music is vibration plus rhythm.

  • The “jump” in centimetres is the measuring stick, not a growth spurt overnight
  • All major organs are there to be checked on the anomaly scan
  • Hair on the head may be visible on ultrasound; colour is still a guess

Your body this week

The anatomy scan looks at brain, heart, spine, kidneys, limbs, placenta site, and fluid. It can find problems and it can miss them. A “normal scan” is good news, not a warranty. You may leave with extra follow-up — that is caution, not a sentence.

  • Ask which views they still need if the baby will not roll
  • Placenta previa on this scan often moves up later — follow the plan you are given
  • A registry can wait until after you have processed the pictures

Get ready for the anomaly scan

This is one of the biggest appointments of pregnancy. Use the checklist above for the visit and a calm registry start. If something is unclear, ask for the report in writing. You are allowed a second explanation.

A general guide, not medical advice. Scan timing and symptoms vary — ask your clinician.
