Week 28 in detail

A kilo of baby — kick counts start in earnest

Baby this week

Eyes can detect light. The brain is folding to pack in surface area. Fat is thicker. Many guidelines ask you to notice movements every day from about now. Ten movements in two hours, at a time the baby is usually lively, is a common (not universal) yardstick — follow what your unit printed.

  • Folds in the brain are a hardware upgrade, not thoughts you can quiz
  • Testes in male fetuses may be descending
  • The baby can have quiet spells; a whole afternoon of nothing after a busy morning still deserves a check if that is new for you

Your body this week

The 28-week bloods often look at anaemia. If you are RhD-negative, anti-D may be offered. Iron tablets and constipation are a package deal unless you ask for a different preparation.

  • Kick counting is a relationship with this baby’s pattern, not a leaderboard
  • Dizziness plus pale lids can be anaemia — the blood test exists for a reason
  • Anti-D is about future pregnancies as well as this one

Get ready to count kicks

Use the kick counter at a consistent time. The checklist above is the 28-week visit, kicks, and Rh status. Reduced movement is a same-day call to maternity, not a “wait until morning” forum post.

A general guide, not medical advice. Scan timing and symptoms vary — ask your clinician.
