Week 31 in detail

Pupils react to light — senses almost done

Baby this week

The baby can turn the head. Pupils react to light. Five senses are close to ready. Brain growth is one of the main jobs left. Lungs still want more time.

  • A torch on the bump is a party trick, not a test you need
  • Head-turning is practice for birth and feeding
  • Nails may need a file after birth — they can be long

Your body this week

Braxton Hicks pick up. Sleep is a mosaic. Rest when the baby is quiet, even at 2 p.m. Touring the labour ward now reduces the “where is the door” panic later.

  • A familiar car park is a clinical intervention for anxiety
  • Nursery furniture that is “almost done” still needs the bolts actually tightened
  • Your own recovery kit (pads, pants, pain relief) is as real as the crib

Get ready

Walk the maternity unit if they offer tours. The checklist above is the tour, furniture, and your postpartum kit. If tightenings become regular and painful this week, phone — 31 weeks is not “practice” until a midwife says so.

A general guide, not medical advice. Scan timing and symptoms vary — ask your clinician.
