Week 37 in detail

Early term — lungs are ready, labour can be real

Baby this week

This is early term. Lungs are mature enough for most babies. Sucking, swallowing, gripping, and breathing movements are rehearsed. The baby is waiting on a chemical cue, not your registry completion.

  • Born this week, most babies do not need intensive care — some still do
  • Vernix may already be shedding
  • Head low in the pelvis means lots of pressure, not a stuck baby by default

Your body this week

A mucus plug or bloody show can appear. Waters can break as a trickle or a splash. Braxton Hicks stay irregular; labour contractions lengthen, strengthen, and close the gap. Know the 5-1-1 idea your unit uses (often 5 minutes apart, 1 minute long, for 1 hour — follow their card).

  • Put a pad on if you leak — colour and smell help the midwife
  • The contraction timer is useful once they are regular
  • A full tank of fuel is unromantic and correct

Get ready

Pack labour snacks. Know the after-hours entrance. The checklist above is snacks, fuel, and doors. If waters break and the liquid is green or you are GBS positive, phone promptly even without contractions.
