Week 42 in detail

42 weeks — most units want a clear birth plan now

Baby this week

At 42 weeks most hospitals recommend induction because placental efficiency and fluid can fall. That is why they have been watching. The baby can still be well — the policy is about not missing the ones who are not.

  • Post-term is a date category, not a failure to “try hard enough”
  • You can still ask what the scan or CTG showed today
  • A scheduled induction is a birth, not a lesser birth

Your body this week

You are likely exhausted. Let the unit run the timetable once you have agreed it. Have the bag in the car. Slow breathing is for waiting rooms as much as for contractions.

  • Do not stay home arguing with the calendar if they have asked you in
  • Partners: snacks, charger, the actual address
  • Kicks on the way in still matter — mention a quiet baby

Get ready

Go in for the planned induction or the extra monitoring they booked. The checklist above is arrival, bag, and breathing. You are at the end of the wait — the next page is the baby, not week 43.

A general guide, not medical advice. Scan timing and symptoms vary — ask your clinician.
