Week 5 in detail

Neural tube closing β€” the heart starts its work

Baby this week

The neural tube (future brain and spinal cord) is closing. The heart tube starts to beat and move blood, even if no one can hear it yet. Limb buds and early vessels are appearing. Folate matters this week more than any fruit comparison.

  • Neural-tube closure is why folic acid is not optional in early pregnancy
  • A heartbeat can exist before a Doppler or clinic scan can catch it
  • This is still an embryo β€” organs are sketches, not finished parts

Your body this week

hCG is climbing fast. Fatigue, peeing more, and nausea can start or intensify. Smell aversion is common. None of that proves the pregnancy is β€œstrong” or β€œweak” β€” hormone curves vary.

  • Morning sickness can happen at night; the name is a lie
  • Skip retinoid skincare and keep a clinician in the loop on any acne cream
  • Food safety (unpasteurized dairy, undercooked eggs, deli meat) starts now

Get ready

Ginger, small meals, and water help some people; they do not fix everyone. Use the checklist above for food-safety and skincare. If vomiting means you cannot keep fluids down, that is a same-day clinical call, not a wait-it-out week.

A general guide, not medical advice. Scan timing and symptoms vary β€” ask your clinician.
