Week 6 in detail

Limb buds and optic cups β€” face is still a sketch

Baby this week

Arm and leg buds are out. Optic vesicles (future eyes) and the early jaw line are forming. The heart is beating more regularly. Many first scans this week are too early to show what you hope to see β€” timing varies by clinic.

  • Limb buds are paddles, not hands with fingers yet
  • The face is folding; it will not look β€œbaby-like” on an early scan
  • Cardiac activity is often visible on transvaginal ultrasound around now, not always

Your body this week

Mood swings and heavy fatigue are hormonal, not a character flaw. Blood flow to the breasts makes them tender. If a scan is booked this week and shows only a sac, that can still be normal β€” dates may be off by a few days.

  • A wireless, supportive bra is comfort, not vanity
  • Lemon water or fizzy water is fine if plain water triggers nausea
  • One empty-looking scan is a reason to reschedule, not to panic alone

Get ready

Crackers before sitting up help some people. Book a dental check when you can; gums get inflamed in pregnancy. The checklist above covers bra and dental β€” ask the clinic what they expect to see at your gestational age so the visit is not a surprise.

A general guide, not medical advice. Scan timing and symptoms vary β€” ask your clinician.
