12 Weeks Pregnant Fetal Development

Baby Development: The kidneys are functioning, producing urine that contributes to amniotic fluid. Reflexes are developing rapidly, and baby can open and close fingers.

Pregnancy Symptoms: Good news! The placenta is taking over hormone production, so morning sickness and extreme fatigue should start to ease up.

Weekly Tip: 12-week scan week! This is a major milestone where you get to see your baby's profile clearly.

At 12 weeks pregnant, your baby is approximately the size of a Plum.

Week 12 in detail

Plum-sized β€” first-trimester scan week for many

Baby this week

Kidneys make urine that becomes part of the amniotic fluid. Reflexes are in. Fingers can curl. For many clinics this is the nuchal / dating scan week: a profile, a heartbeat, and a better due date than LMP alone.

  • Urine production is a kidney milestone, not a tiny bladder you can see at home
  • The placenta is taking over more hormone work from the ovary
  • A clear profile on scan is exciting and still not a 3D souvenir of personality

Your body this week

Nausea and crushing fatigue often ease as the placenta takes over progesterone production β€” not on a schedule, and not for everyone. Energy returning is a gift, not a requirement to β€œcatch up” on work you skipped.

  • A due date from CRL on scan usually beats calendar math
  • Spotting after sex or a scan can happen; soaking or pain still needs a call
  • Announcement timing is yours β€” there is no medically correct Instagram week

Get ready for the 12-week scan

This visit is a milestone. Miscarriage risk is lower after a normal scan, not zero. Use the checklist above for photos and a budget start. Write three questions on paper so the sonographer’s speed does not wipe them.

A general guide, not medical advice. Scan timing and symptoms vary β€” ask your clinician.
