Week 13 in detail

Second trimester — fingerprints and a real energy shift

Baby this week

Welcome to the second trimester. Fingerprints are forming. Bones harden. The face can frown or squint on a high-quality scan. The body is catching up with the head. Most structural “firsts” are done; this is growth season.

  • Fingerprint ridges are unique already
  • Vocal cords exist but there is no air to cry with
  • Intestines should now be fully inside the abdomen

Your body this week

Many people feel dramatically better: less nausea, more appetite, a bit of glow from extra blood. That is an average, not a promise. If you still feel wretched, you are not failing the trimester.

  • Waistbands starting to fight back is a clothing problem, not a weight-shame problem
  • Pelvic-floor (Kegel) work is easier to learn now than at 36 weeks
  • Travel in the second trimester is often the most comfortable window — still check airline and clinician rules

Get ready

Start pelvic-floor practice while you can still find the muscles. Maternity clothes can wait a week; a waistband that cuts in is a reason to switch, not to “hold out.” The checklist above is Kegels, clothes, and travel — this is why the second trimester is the usual babymoon window.

A general guide, not medical advice. Scan timing and symptoms vary — ask your clinician.
