Week 8 in detail

Raspberry-sized, and looking more like a baby

Baby this week

The embryonic tail is fading. Lips, nose, and eyelids are taking shape. Neural pathways are wiring up, and tiny muscle twitches have started — you will not feel movement yet.

  • Elbows, wrists, and toes (webbing going) are forming
  • The heart is beating and may show on a first scan
  • Face is shifting from “embryo” toward “human”

Your body this week

Blood volume is starting to rise (it can increase by up to about 50% later in pregnancy). Extra circulation plus hormones can mean a glow — or acne. Breathlessness is common as the heart works harder.

  • Nausea and smell sensitivity often peak around now
  • Vivid dreams and broken sleep from hormones
  • Breast tenderness as tissue and blood flow increase

Get ready for the first scan

Many people have a dating ultrasound around now. A visible heartbeat is a milestone; miscarriage risk falls after that, but it is not zero. Use the checklist above for questions and a symptom log. Bring the prenatal vitamin bottle (or a photo) if they ask about folic acid.
